न त्वहं कामये राज्यं न स्वर्ग नापुनर्भवम्। कामये दुःखतप्तानां प्राणिनामातिमोचनम्॥
na tvaham kāmaye rājyam na svargam nāpunar bhavam kāmaye duḥkha taptānām prāṇināmārtimochanam
Skandapurāņa I
Not for any kingdom do I long,
not for the kingdom of heaven, not even for freedom from the endless
cycle of birth and death; for one and only one thing do I long -
to free living beings from their agony and sorrow and to wipe away their tears.
This mantra was one of Mahātmā Gāndhiji's favorite prayers which he recited every day.
