________________ Subbāşitas in Gunapala's Jambucariyam 131 1757 (Great) १० जाव न दिति हिययं, गरया विहति ताव कज्जाइ। भवदिन्न चिय हियर्थ, गुरु पि कज्ज परिसमत्तं ॥ (५.३) 10 The works do not get accomplished so long as the mind of the great is not applied (to them). The work, even big, is finished, (the moment their) mind is is devoted (to it). (5; 6). गुणि (Virtuous) ११ वियरंति जत्थ गुणिणो, पसर न लहति निग्गुणा तत्थ । सुरंसूर्ण पुरओ, खज्जोओ कुणउ किं वराओ ? ॥ १२ अहवा गुणवंताण, मग्गच्चारेण होइ गुणनियरो। रविसंगेण पजायइ, कसिण पि हु निम्मल गयण ॥ (१.४४-४५) 11. Persons, devoid of virtees, do not get any notice or attention where the persons, full of virtues, move about. For what does an insignificant sword stand in front of sun's rays ? 12. Or a multitude of virtues develops on following the path of the virtuous. A dark sky becomes clean when it comes into contact with the sun. (1. 44-45). जुव जुबई (Woman) १३ अथिराइच चलाई, असंठियाई सम्भावनेहरहियाई । ___जुवईण हिययाइ, खणे खणे होंति अन्नाइ ॥ (१९५) 13. The hearts of the young ladies are unstable, fickle and inconstant. They are devoid of good intentions and affection. They change every moment. (8. 105). दुक्कय-सुकय (Bad Deed; Good Deed) १४ सकका सीहस्स वणा, पलाई हत्थिणो य मत्तस्स ! सुकयस्स दुक्कयस्स व, भण कत्थ पलाइउ सक्का ? ॥ १५ जे जेण पावियव. सुह' व दुक्ख व जीवलोमि । अप्पाणेण य वच्चइ, निज्जइ य बला कयंतेण ॥ (११.४) 14. The elephents are able to run away from the forest of the intoxicated lions. But tell (me) where are the people able to run away to from the effect of) the good and the bad deeds ? ___15. Whatever happiness or misery is to be obtained (by one) in the world goes along with the soul as it is led forcibly by the god of death. (11. 44-45).
