________________ 54 INTRODUCTION with reference to Divakara, but invariably the word Divakara is used along with Siddhasena, In fact the words Divakara and Siddhasena are uniformly considered as interchangeable and they are promiscuously used whenever a reference to the works of Siddhasena is found while, the name Gandhahasti is not found associated with any quotations from the works attributed to Siddhasena with the exception of some quotations found in the works of Yasovijayaji1 of the 18th century. 2. All the quotations prior to those which are in the works of Yasovijayaji -associated with the name of Gandhahasti2- had been taken from the comimentary of Siddhasena the disciple of Bhaswami. 3. The disciple of Yasobhadra Suri says that Bhagavan Gandha Hasti Siddhasena wrote a new Commentry on Tattwartha inspite of the existance of Commentary by Haribhadra and so my Guru tried to complete the Commentary of Haribhadra with the help of it. “हरिभद्राचार्येणार्धषण्णामध्यायानामाद्यानां टीका कृता भगवता तु गन्धहस्तिना fagààa qõyı halı azarista aœ'aizzudaigan zut” T. H. p. 521. From all this it is quite clear that the oldest reference to this Siddasena Gandhahasti the disciple of Bhaswāmi cannot be shown to be prior to the 9th century as for instance, the one found in Silanka's commentary of 1--Tattvartha introduction p. 37 note 62. 2-Ibid p. 38 note 65.
