________________ 20 INTRODUCTION दिदृक्षुर्भिक्षुरायातो वारितो द्वारि तिष्ठति । हस्तन्यस्तचतुःश्लोक: किमागच्छतु गच्छतु ? ॥ १२४ ।। " .., " A Jaina. m-ndicant with tour verses in his hand desires to see you . He is standing at the door . for he does not get access , Shonld he .come in or go away.?" Learning, the arrival of Divākara, the King at once asked him to be escorted in and seated on a respectable seat and asked him to repeat the four verses. The verses purported to say as follows:-- "Whence have you learnt this marvellous art of archery in which the arrow' (also beggerst come to you in numbers, while the stringss (your merits) go to the opposite direction." 1-अपूर्व य धनुविद्या भवता. शिक्षिता. कुतः । मार्गणौधः समभ्येति गुण याति दिगन्तरम् ॥ १२६ ॥ अमी पानकुरङ्कामाः सप्तापि • जलराशयः । ... ययशोराजहंसस्य पञ्जर भवनत्रयम् ॥ १२७ ॥ सर्वदा सर्वदोऽसीति मिथ्या संस्तूयसे बुधैः । । :: नारया लेभिरे पृष्ठं न वक्षः परयोषितः ॥ १२८ ॥ भयमेकमनेकेभ्यः . शत्र भ्यो विधिवत्सदा । ददासि तच्च ते नास्ति सजन् ! चित्रमिद महत् ॥ १२६ । 2-मार्गण means 'an arrow' as wen as a mendicant' while showing contradiction the first meaning should be taken, and the second meaning to remove the contradiction. 3-गुण means a string' as well as quality'.
