In ancient times it was called Samiyana. Hundreds of rich Oswal Jain families lived there in fort-like red stone mansions. Each mansion accommodated a large joint family with many servants. Adjacent to these were large yards for cattle, horses and chariots. Each mansion resembled a royal household. The families were rich and united. People from neighbouring areas visited and spent some time exchanging views. All complaints, disputes, and business negotiations were settled at these informal gatherings. The head of a family was called Shah ji. Minister Jesal Shah Chhajed and his wife Jayatshri also lived here in a magnificent mansion. tuu One morning Mantri Jesal ji was sitting in the courtyard on a large sofa. Some merchants and other people were also sitting with him. A maid from the mansion came running. Congratulations Shahji a lotus has blossomed in your family." Great! Good news, indeed! As it is an interesting and inspiring story we reproduce it in brief. The name of the king of Polaspur was Vijaya and that of his queen was Shridevi. The name of their little son was Atimuktak Kumar (Ayavanta Kumar). He was very charming, delicate and innocent. Once Bhagavan Mahavir came to Polaspur. Ganadhar Indrabhuti came towards the palace while seeking alms. Atimuktak was playing in the courtyard of the palace. When he saw Gautam Swami he was very pleased. He asked, "Sir! Who are you? Why are you walking around?" Gautam Swami introduced himself and said, "I have come here to seek alms?" The prince said, "Please come to my house. My mother will be happy to see you. Please accept alms from her." Holding the fingers of Gautam Swami the innocent prince lead him straight to the palace. Shridevi was extremely happy to see this. Her joy found no bounds when she saw her son holding the finger of the great Gautam Swami. She paid her homage and was very happy to offer pure food and water as alms. The prince asked, "Now where will you go ?" Gautam Swami replied, "Now I will go to my religious guru and head of the order." Atimuktak, "Do you also have a guru?" Gautam Swami, "Yes, Shraman Bhagavan Mahavir is my preceptor. He stays in the garden outside the city." 31 to Education International Page #34 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ DADAGURU SHRI JINA KUSHAL SURI Atimuktak was filled with the curiosity to behold Bhagavan. He accompanied Gautam Swami to the garden. When he saw Bhagavan Mahavir he was filled with joy. When he heard the speech of Bhagavan he was overwhelmed with feelings of detachment. Due to the influence of pious karmas of earlier birth he desired to become an ascetic. He requested, "Bhante! I want to be your disciple." Bhagavan said, "Beloved of gods! Seek permission from your parents and then get initiated. Don't postpone a pious act." Atimuktak returned home and expressed his desire for initiation to his mother. The mother said, "Son! You are still a child. You are ignorant. What do you know of religion?" The child said, "Mother, I know what I do not know and I do not know what I know. "With surprise the mother said, "What do you mean by that?" Atimuktak, "Mother! I know that one who is born is certain to die. But I do not know when, where, how, and after how many days he will die. I do not know that what karmas cause a soul to be born as an infernal being, an animal, a human, or a divine being. But I know that it is one's own karmas that lead to such births." These words of profound intelligence and detachment from her son reassured the mother. At last the parents arranged for his initiation ceremony. He was initiated by Bhagavan Mahavir, studied scriptures including the eleven Angas and got liberated in the end.
