A NOTE ON BASIC IMMIGRATION POLICY 1 This is an attempt to provide a general individuals, on immgiration to Canada. whereby one changes place of residence to another country and start a new life in the adopted new country. information, to the interested Immigration is a process - - Canada is a land of immigrants. As such the Canadian government at all times actively monitors, regulates, revises, amends and reamends its policy, procedures, statutes, regulations and quotas of immigrants, who like to come to Canada to seek opportunities, advances and a new place to settle. Some important Immigration Classes; Family class: Applies to close family members and it entails sponsorship by a Canadian resident family member. This class has top priority in terms of processing and no points have to be scored. One may sponsor a spouse, a fiancee, never married children, parents and grandparents, who in turn can bring with them their unmarried sons and daughters of any age. One may also sponsor an orphaned brother, sister, nephew, niece or grandchild under the age of eighteen years, and a child under the age of thirteen years whom sponsor intends to adopt provided the child is orphaned or abandoned etc. It would appear that in practice the age of parents is no longer of any concern, even when the sponsor is a landed immigrant and not a citizen. There are other finer points but lack of space forbids to deal here. The sponsor is required to give an undertaking of assistance in all cases except for spouse and never married children. Shantichandra B. Shah Barrister & Solicitor 1058A Albion Road#205 Toronto, Ontario Canada M9V 1A7 2 - Convention Refugee: This class does not require any points or sponsors. This is a subject by itself and cannot be dealt here. 3 - Independent Immigrants: This includes a) Assisted Relative: These are more distant family members compared to the family class. These relatives include aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, da include sons, grandsons and grandaughters. Assisted relative must get atleast one point for occupation and a total of 60. Brother, sister, son and daughter applicant needs only 55 points. The independent worker applicant requires 70 points. Variety of occupations are constantly, to reflect job market, assigned with a point value of 0-10. b) Entreprenueur/Investor: The former is to set up an active operation and create jobs where as the latter is a passive provider of risk capital (in Quebec province risk is underwritten by the State) 2010_02 In conclusion, one may point out that family reunification is a stated objective of the immigration policy. Last remaining son or daughter is given special consideration to enable to join the family in Canada. The same spirit comes through with respect to job offers to relatives in family businesses. It is possible for a bonafide family business to achieve business objectives through employing a relative and for the family the objective of getting him landed in Canada. Jain Ed3cation International 2010_02 - Page #5 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ SAMANASUTTAM A COMPEDIUM OF THE AGAMAS The Agamas, the sacred scriptures of the Jainas are vast and varied holy doctrines and writings written in Prakrit language with Ardhamagadhi and Sauraseni forms. They have preserved the philosophical reflections of the Tirthankaras. During the 2500th Anniversary of Lord Mahavir, the last Tirthankar, in 1974, Vinobha Bhave, who have been inspired and energised by whole Jaina doctrines in his spiritual and social reform themes, urged the Jain community in India to produce an opus on the Agamas. Under a singular guidance of Jain Acharyas, saints and scholars worked arduously and thus born, SAMANASUTTAM in the year 1974. Samanasuttam is the bespoken words and the doctrines delineated by the great Sramanas, the Tirthankars and the Saints. It is the cardinal holy book of Jain religion and its followers. It consists of 756 Prakrit gathas (verses), divided into 44 chapters dealing with various facets of Jainism. All Jain schools of thoughts, irrespective of their regional or linguistic diversities, consider Samanasuttam as the cardinal holy book, a compedium of reflections, philosophy and doctrines of Jain Religion. Dr Kamal Chand Sogani, formerly Professor of Philosophy at Sukhadia University in Udaipur, India, has begun translating Samanasuttam into English. Some of those English verses have already appeared in Gommatavani and Jain Digest magazines. - Dr K.C.Sogani H7 Chittaranjan Marg Jaipur - 30200, India. JAIN STUDY CENTER OF NC PIONEERS IN REPUBLISHING OLD JAIN BOOKS Carner, NC. Old and out of print Jain books are sometimes hard to find and this kind of loss to the society can be immeasurable. In north America much needs to be done to see this loss can be controlled beyond damage. The Jain Study Center of North Carolina, in this direction, has done a pioneering job in republishing some old titles. Three years ago, the Center republished, "Kund Kundacharya Ke Theen Ratnas" from Navjivan Publishing Co in Ahmedabad, India. Just last year, "Sadhak Aur Sathi" by Dr Soneji and "Jain Dharma Ka Parva" by Pandit Sukhlalji were chosen by the Center to publish them in English, and they are currently in the press in the current year, the Center has a plan to republish seven books: 1) Achara Dharma 2) Samyama Dharma 3) Last Preaching and 4) Sami-Sanjano Upadesh-, all by Gopaldas J.Patel. And rest of the titles are by Pandit Sukhalaji. The efforts of the Jain Study Center of North Carolina in undertaking this venture warrant appreciation and ackr.owledgement. JAIN YOUTHS OF NORTH AMERICA CRAVE FOR INTERACTION & INTEGRATION Toronto, Canada. Mona Sheth, Secretary of the Youth Group of the Jain Society of Toronto, lately released a letter calling for the establishment of links between Jain youths, aged 14 to 25, of various Jain organisations in north America. The call refered to the fact that this age group, in any given city, is constrained by its size in number, and therefore, lacks any cohesive strategy for a unified common resolve. There is not much of a scope to get together, interact and lead a rich and meaninful Jaina way of life. The first generation of home grown Jain youths is emerging, or has emerged in north America and with no values imbibed in them, or having failed to prepare for a leadership, the Jain community plus its youth will face a future of uncertainities across the board. Jain organisations in north America will hopefully create a congenial environment in this direction and devise strong effective measures to Jain Edsation International 2010_02 Page #7 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ act on. Perhaps the Jain Federation of North America could provide a plank for it to begin with. Title: Political History of Northern India From Jain Sources Publisher: Sohanlal Jaindharma Pracharak Samiti, Amritsar, Punjab, India. The Political History of Northern India is accounted here from Jain sources such as literary records and epigraphic studies. It prsents the reconstruction, often the new construction, of the history of various dynasties that ruled northern India from 650 AD. - 1300 A.D. Further more, it deals with many political theories, practices, and makes correlations of ancient names of places with that of the present. The contributions made by Jains on Political Science through the works of Somadeva and Hemachandra are authoritatively accounted. - The political account in the book begins with the Jain Aihole inscription dated 634 A.D. of King Pulikeshi II to chronicle the Harsha reign in Kanuj. Harivamsha Purana of Jinasens of Wardhamana Nagar in Kathaivar narrates the contemporary kings in 783 A.D. and provides an unbroken geneology of Jain teachers after the death of Lord Mahavir onwards upto Gupta dynasty. The account of Rashtrakutas in the south during 783 A.D. to Gurjara Pratiharas during 778 918 A.D. is elaborative. The importance of the inscription of 959 A.D.brings out that the earliest Jain Poet Pampa, of Kannada language, hailed from Gurjara Prathihara lineage 21 2010_02 of * Various Jain souces exhaustively throw light on Gahadvala dynasty upto 1172 A.D.after Gurjara Prathiharas. Similarly the Senas of Bengal, who sprang from Karnataka in the south, have been chronicled upto 12th centuary. The Mulgunda inscription of 902-5 A.D. gives an account of a Jain teacher, Kanakasena of Sena lineage, who was given grants in trust for Jain Chaityalaya. The Candellas, the Paramaras Kacchapaghatas, the of central India, the Cahamanas of Rajasthan, the Vaghelas of Saurashtra are thus chronicled upto 13th centuary. Page #23 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ JAIN RELIGION IN INDIA'S HISTORY AN HISTORIAN'S REFLECTIONS Miss Vasanta Kumari Reader in History Maharani's College Mysore, India Religion is the vital principle of world community and its role is dominant in moulding civilisation. India's civilisation indeed has blossomed on the glorious edifices of many religions and their doctrines. Jainism, the oldest in India as an organised religion, has hollowed Indian soil with its doctrines through twenty four Tirthankaras. India's civilisation has grown progressively in the broad horizon of social freedom, socio-economic equality and ethico-spiritual secularism doctrines of Jain philosophy. The legacy of Jainism to India's civilisation is unparallel. While European civilisation owes to the classics of Greek and Rome, Indian civilisation owes much to Jain Religion. Jainism is a rational religion. Its contribution to India is multifacet. It laid foundation for the development of India's present languages and pioneered and perfected the Prakrit, the oldest language of India. In art and architecturs Jainas have achieved perfection and the Jain Shrines and temples scattered over the length and breadth of India from the ancient to the present stand as testimony. Humanity owes much to the Jaina concept of Ahimsa, one of the dynamic doctrines of Jain Religion. It is a ray of hope to the harassed human existence and an ultimate denouement to universal Peace and Humanism. Mrs Anie Besant has expressed aptly: " The message of Jainism to humanity is Peace between man and man, man and animal, and Peace everywhere and in all things, a perfect brotherhood of all that lives" The dynamic Spiritual Panditry and Power of Jainism is a forgotten episode in the pages of Indian history. Historical truths of Jain Religion have not been explored, either in the past or at present and due attention has not been paid. Religious wars in terms of crusades might not have occured on India's soil but Jains collectively and individually have suffered religious persecutions in ancient southern India. Against odds, Jain religion and its followers still survived although in dwindling numbers. It is unbelievably true, often, that Jains from pass north of the Vindhyan mountains in India.novicely think that there are no Jain indigenous communities in the southern part of India. Jain Religion is a pre-Aryan and non-Aryan Faith organised into a religion, by the first Tirthankara, Rishab, in the history of Indian antiquary, and thereupon till 2550 years ago many more Tirthankaras were born. Mahavira is the twentyfourth Tirthankara among such sages. Jainism crossed the Indian boundary during the time of Alexander, the great Greek king and before and after king Asoka of Mauryan India. It crossed into Ceylon, China and Greece and thus Jain Religion has brought an impact on the body philosophy and peoples of these nations at those times.
