The five modestly rising hill-tops form a row of quintet summits, each with an identity of its own. Fables and legends surround these peaks with names evocative of a glorius past-Vipulachal, Vaibhargiri, Rishigiri, Balahak Panduk. Historically, Jain Scriptures contain elaborate references to the five peaks of which Vipulachal claims exceptional distinction. and It was on the Vipulachal summit that Lord Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara, delivered his first sermon on attaining omniscience. The sermon preached by the Tirthankar emanated in divine sound Divya Dhvani that could enlighten all living beings. the supreme bliss The essence of the message was Sarvodaya of all. The Tirthankar's audience, the Samavasarana place of resort for all-humans and celestial beings as birds and beasts-the lowliest of the living. Scriptured chronicles speak of the Assemblies held by Mahavira at Mount Vipulachal. - was a well as - An architectural marvel atop Vipulachal now marks the historic past when the last of the Tirthankaras (in the present cosmic time-cycle) delivered his first sermon in the year 557 B.C. Mahavira's life and message have had a deep impression, in particular, on Sahu Shanti Prasad Jain, the renowned industrialist and philanthropist of India. Mr Jain had been inspired by the illuminating trail blazed by the Tirthankar. Mahavira's spiritual pursuits an epitome of quest and conquest-, had him set out on the mendicant's path renouncing princely comforts at 30. + The idea of commemorating the event of Mahavira's first sermon from Mt. Vipulachal had been taken up by the Jain community of India from the early forties. Sahu Shanti Prasad Jain was associated with the plan from the very outset. It was during the celebrations marking 2500th Nirvan anniversary of Lord Mahavira that a decision was taken to errect a suitable monument. Sahu Shanti Prasad Jain single handedly took the entire responsibility of constructing the monument on Mt. Vipulachal. He took up the task with great devotion and a final blue print was approved. Shortly after the construction commenced, Sahu Shanti Prasad passed away. India lost its one of the great industrialists and a philantropist and the Jain community all over the world lost its dynamic and magnificent leader. Immediately, Sahu Asok Kumar Jain, the son of Sahu Shanti Prasad Jain, entrusted the task of executing the project to Nemichand Jain, honorary secretary of Sahu Jain Trust. With the courageous vision of Sahu Asok Kumar Jain and the dexterity of Nemichand Jain 2010_02 Page #7 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ An imposing marble super structure rising from the sacred spot sanctified by Lord Mahavira's first sermon to the world now stands as a beaconlight on the majestic Vipulachal summit. The grand edifice rises to a height of 72 feet corresponding to the years of Lord's life-span. The 3-tier edifice symbolises the soul's trilogy of the exterior self, the inner self and the ultimate perfected self. Its circular shape proclaims the divine majesty of Samavasarana. On the crest of the top of the pedestal are enshrined four 5-foot statues of Lord Mahavira, symbolising the radiation of his sermon in all directions. The entrance itself is embellished with a pillar that carries identical inscriptions in Jain language Prakrit, India's national language Hindi and English. The inscription reads, "I bow to the Omniscient Vardhaman Mahavira whose sermons preached the welfare of all living beings of the entire universe." At a solemn function held on April 12,1986 at Rajgir when members of Jain community had assembled from all over India. Sahu Shriyans Prasad Jain, brother of late Sahu Shanti Prasad Jain dedicated the memorial to the entire Jain community for the enlightenment of the nation. From Rajgir, a flight of over 800 steps lead to Mt. Vipulachal. This small town was once the flourishing capital of Magadha founded in the sixth century B.C.by Emperor Shrenik Nestling at the foot of the five-hill ranges, Rajgir draws every year over hundred thousand Jain piligrims and an equal number of non-Jains. The monument has further sanctified The Shrine. Excerpts from THE SAMANASUTTAM Central Book Of The Jains Obeisance to Arihantas (embodied spiritually perfect personalities) Obeisance to Siddhas (disembodied spiritually perfect souls). Obeisance to Acharyas (propogators of ethico-spiritual values). Obeisance to Upadhyayas (teachers of ethico-spiritual values). Obeisance to all Sadhus (pious personalities) in the world. This five-fold obeisance is the destroyer of all the vices and (so) among all the (types of) auspiciousness (this) becomes the foremost auspiciousness. Meditate on the five holy teachers (spiritual pillars) who are permeated with spiritual energy, who are auspicious, who are the shelters in the four grades of existence, who have adorned the world, who are the supreme objects of devotion, and who have been adored by the human and celestial beings along with the Vidhyadharas. Arihantas, Asariras (siddhas), Acharyas, Upadhyayas and Munis are the five holy personalities. Omkara has emerged from the first letters, A+ A+ A+ U + M , of the five holy personalities. A group of 18 followers from the United States under the spiritual guidance of Gurdev Chitrabhanu immensely experienced their inner peace and providence through their voyage. The tour took them to Sravanabelagola, where emperor Chandra Gupta with his religious Curu Badrabahu made history over 2288 years ago and the monolithic granite statue of Lord Bahubali, son of the first Tirthankara, Rishab, was carved 1007 years ago by the then premier of the ruling Ganga kings. At Palitana, the Shatrunjaya temples provided breathtaking, inspiring and memorable moments to the voyageurs with special vibrations imparted through their architectural beauty and magnitude. Joy was exclaimed at Mt. Abu where atop Delwara temples exhibit exquisite and spectuacular architectural beauty. At the Adinath alcove, a lengthy meditation was held and Gurdev gave special blessings to each and performed initiations. Other highlight here was Gurdev with his father climbed the moutain at Achalgarh and spent time together meditating. It is recalled here that Curdev during his monkhood had spent a lot of time in the area. Later a trip to Taj Mahal in Agra was made. The awe-inspiring temples, Gurdev's guidance and the inner peace and the glow, of the people, are what transformed the participants. Many observed, "Once you have gone, you are quite the same again." But each agreed. It was a memorable important life experience. never PARSHVANATH JAYANTI CELEBRATED AT ST. LOUIS, MO St.Louis, MO. A series of nearly fifty inscriptions at Halebid on Vijaya Parshvanath monument built by Gangaraja's son Poppa Dandanayaka reveal a lot about Gangaraja's splendid carrer. To liberate Gangavadi province from the clutches of the Cholas and their domination, Gangaraja was entrusted with the supreme command. Adiyama, the Chola governor of Cangavadi, when refused to surrender on seize by Hoysala army, Gangaraja marched against the enemy and a severe battle took place at Talkad in 1114 A.D. and the Chola army was completely defeated. In honour of this victory, the king granted Bindiganavole village to Gangaraja. Several inscriptions bear bold exploit of Gangaraja in this battle. At Talakad when the two armies met, Adiyama was defeated and ran away as if in a race and the other Chola officer, Tigula Dama turned his back in the battle field, escaped and took refuge in the forest. Another epigraph records that valiant Cangaraja captured Talakad, took posession of Kongu, killed Narasingavarma and took posession of the king Vishnu. Yet another record mentions that Cangaraja having driven out the Tigulas (Tamilians), restored Gangavadi to the Hoysala king, Gangaraja was granted Govindavadi village, and he was elevated to the rank of Samantha. The success of Cangaraja against the Cholas alarmed the other neighbour, the Chalukyas. The Chalukya emperor Vikramadity VI collected a huge army from his twelve feudatories and was led against the Hoysalas by the experienced general, Acharasa. The army marched towards Hoysala capital Dorasamudra and reached Kannegala in the present Hassan district. Gangaraja once again assumed the supreme command and attacked the huge Chalukya force at Kannegala. The Chalukya army fled away in confusion leaving behind their equipment. Gangaraja was a staunch supporter of Jain religion. He took keen interest in its propogation. He is described as the strongest champion of Jain Faith during this period. The Jain records make frequent reference to his gifts to the needy, relief to the sick and promotion of learning. He took pains to repair many Jain temples. He took interest to beautify the surroundings of Lord Bahubali at Sravanabelagola and built the enclosure around it. He also built a new town, Jinanatha Pura, near Sravanabelagola. Gangaraja died in 1133 A.D. and his death was deeply mourned by the king and his subjects. 2010_02 Page #24 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ Trips to Las Vegas Hawaii And Around The World CALL JAYA TRAVEL 3221 W.
