Muniji is the champion of unity among Jains, promoter of Peace on world stage and a visionary for progressive future. He is working tirelessly for the establishment of "Panch Tirth" at Siddhachalam in New Jersey, U.S.A. Siddhachalam, is the first Jain resident community for monks and nuns, shravakas and shravakis in North America. The editor of Jain Digest had an opportunity to interview the Acharya in Toronto during his recent Canadian visit... Question: Muniji, could you tell about your mission as a Jain Acharya in North America? Acharya : Indepth studies of Agamic scripture, its philosophical approach to performing wisdom in self-realization and salvation set me, a long ago, in the course of propogating and publicising the virtues and the values of Jain principles. While this is all fine, the rapid development of science has risen so much in the hands of man that it has brought us to the brink of total annihilation of Mankind. Ahimsa and peace, in the threat of nuclear annhilation, are the very foundations for the salvation of Mankind. Ahimsa, as practiced by Mahatma Gandhi, brought salvation to India. You know, Gandhiji derived his strength from Ahimsa through direct influence of his mother, a devoted Jain and the continued dialogue he had with Jain Muni Rajchandra and sadhvi Ujal Kumari of Maharashtra. This historical truth of Ahimsa as preached by the Arihants equally rema in, even today, as important as ever for a durable Peace in the world. My mission is Ahimsa and Peace, as enunciated and interpreted by the Arihants. Question: In brief, could you explain the philosophy you espose for your crusade? Acharya: Jain philosophy is a treasure of ethical, logical and truth oriented phenomena. Take the simple principle of Ratnatraya -- interrelated right knowledge, right perception and right conduct. This observance ensures the progress in its cycle. And teachings of Mahavira 2010_02 Page #24 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ on health, mind and prana control help attain perfectness of being a perfect person. The philosophy and the principle are for all people at all times to attain Arihanthood. Question: Guruji, what vehicle do you have to achieve your mission? Acharya: You know, my dear good soul, we have various local Jain organizations to cater to the local community's religious, socio-economic aspirations and advancement. Voidness in spiritual direction and leadership have been eliminated by initiating and involving in the aspiration of establishing Jain temples and centers wherever they were warranted. In reality, local organizations and individuals are the vehicles. This demonstrates how Ahimsa and Peace mission could be achieved in the world community. International Mahavira Missions in various parts of this continent and the world are for national and international commitments as does a local Jain society functions for the same objectives of practicing, publicizing and propogating the great principles and philosophy of Jainism for the benefit of harmony among Mankind through Ahimsa and Peace. Question: What advise, Acharyaji, do you have for us, as Jains, to adopt to a new reality and remain a cohesive force in this society we live in? Acharya: Jains from different parts of the world with their diversified socio-cultural and linguistic background have chosen a new homeland. The beauty is its richness in its various forms. Incorporate the best of this richness. Differences in practices, performances and the traditions be debarred from the thought and dutifully declare to vow yourself as the children of Arihants. Togetherness does it all. Question: Swamiji, what is Siddhachalam and what are your visions for it? Acharya : Siddhachalam, a community of Jain monks and nuns, shravaka and shraykis, is a beautiful 108 acre hilltop area near Pocono Mountains in New Jersey. It is the first Jain community in the west for all Jains of all traditions and practitioners of other backgrounds. Siddhachalam actively promotes Ahimsa for world Peace, vegetarianism and non-violence to animals. It is a wildlife Sanctuary. Retreats and seminars are held regularly at Siddhachalam. They include Yoga, meditation, chanting, time for reflection, and recreation such as swimming, hiking and running. Siddhachalam provides meals and lodging for the guests at a nominal charge of $15 per day. 2010_02 Page #25 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ My vision for Siddhachalam is manyfold. People of Jain Faith in North America number about 60,000. Currently, several beautiful statues of marble and brass of various Tirthankaras have been installed at Siddhachalam and are temporarily in the Meditation Hall. Future plans call for worship facilities that include the establishment of "Panch Tirth". These will be replicas of five of India's beautiful Jain shrines -- Palitana, Shikarji, Pavapuri, Bahubali and Mahavirji. Also planned is the establishment of Ahimsa University, offering accredited courses in religion, philosophy, yoga and social studies. Other things planned are library and Jain Art Gallery. "Panch Tirth" will build a bridge to the heritage of the Jains in North America and their cultural contribution to the adopted home will enrich their life quality. Thus, Siddhachalam will provide spiritual feeling and a sense of pilgrimage to revere. Question: Acharyaji, when did you become a Jain Acharya and how your presence as Acharya will affect Jain communities across North America? Acharya: H. H. Upadyaya Kavi Shri Amar Muni at Veerayatan in Rajgir, India honoured me with the title of Acharya in 1980. This facilitated to establish Arhat Sangha with several renunciates at Siddhachalam. The Sangha is a progressive group in the sense that the group is allowed to use fire, water for cooking, tilling the soil, use of vehicle for movement, working and managing money. This progressive adjustment has updated the renunciate life to meet the demands of modern times and help to propogate the teachings of the Thirthankaras. Regarding the effects on Jain communities, I suppose the benefits are numerous. We will provide spiritual and moral leadership and direction and that will alleviate some of the complexities of fast lane life. We will surely strive to pass on the Jain heritage to the younger generation. Question: Acharyaji, now I like to pose two last questions and they are simple and yet are of interest to the community. Acharya: Do not hesitate; go ahead. I will surely answer them. Question: Muniji, are you grooming anyone to carry your ideals and responsibilities in your absence? 2010_02 Page #26 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ Acharya: Yes, I do. I want that all Swamijis and Munis at Siddhachalam to adhere to. It is very essential for the continuity of the program and the progress. Question: Guruji, is there a public accountability of the affairs of Siddhachalam, and if so, what are they? Acharya: You know, Siddhachalam belongs to everyone and hence its affair is open to, I mean, the members who are involved in a way. Siddhachalam was purchased in 1983 by the International Mahavira Jain Mission, a non-profit and tax exempt organization, whose objective is to promote Ahimsa, Peace and the teachings of Arihantas. The Ashram at Siddhachalam is comprised of a small community of residents and a larger general membership helps to serve and support Sidetachalam physically and financially. Some of the residents work outside of the Ashram and provide monetary support. Siddhachalam was purchased at a price of $330,000 and there remains a mortgage of $ 95,000. Most of the expenses of Siddhachalam goes for maintenance and improvements. The funds come from contributions and donations, and the list of these are available. Food expenses of the residents and the guests at Siddhachalam are self-borne. The financial support is provided by Mr. Arun Kothari of New York to meet the required bare needs of the Munis. As far as accountability of financial affairs, the annual financial statements are there for public scrutiny. Siddhachalam is open to everyone who believes in the gospel truth of the Arihants. Its accountability is open. Mind you that the Board of Trustees and the executive members of the organization have been selected to avoid groupism. I guess, after a five-year period, elections could be introduced. It is only intended to avoid initial practical problems and to ensure no groupism creeps in. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to invite all Jain bretherns to support Siddhachalam through their financial contribution in any way they can and in any size. Mr. Madho P. Jain, or Shirley Hardy at (201) 362-9793 could be contacted regarding all contributions to Siddhachalam. My blessings are with the Federation of Jain As sociations in all its endeavours. Jai Jinendra. 2010_02 Page #27 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ Trips to Las Vegas Hawaii And Around The World CALL JAYA TRAVEL 3221 W.
