Lord Mahaveer is still remembered and worshipped by millions today, 2600 years after his birth. Why? Acharya Mahaprajna examines the life story of Mahaveer and his message for the world. ON AN AUSPICIOUS DAY on 17th June, 599 B.C. (Ashad Shukla 6, Friday ) LORD Mahaveer was born. The birth of a person in this world is a common event. A number of people are born unnoticed on this earth every day but Mahaveer's birth was marked by an uncanny element. While still growing in his mother's womb, Mahaveer was endowed with clairvoyance (avadhi gyan ). An ordinary man is born with indirect knowledge (paroksh) but Mahaveer was born with direct knowledge (pratyaksh), as if he had experienced everything already. This was an extraordinary thing about his birth. When he grew up, he was sent to a local school but on the very first day his teacher noticed his transcendental wisdom and declared that he didn't require any schooling. After Mahaveer's birth, his family began to grow prosperous. Impressed by this phenomenon, his parents gave him the name of Vardhman. Since he was clairvoyant, he came to be known as saman. Realizing his power of tolerance during spiritual practice, he was named as 'Mahaveer' by a class of gods. Two saints - Vijay and Sanjay - came. They saw Mahaveer and a mere glimpse of his personality dispelled all their doubts. A number of names were given and amid them lay hidden a nameless personality.............to read further please click here TEMPLES FIRST EVER MATA TRISHALA'S PRATIMA INSTALLED AT MAHAVIRPURAM TIRTH, CHOTILA, RAJKOT, INDIA - On Rajkot-Chotila Highway, there is a tirth in Gujarat named Mahavirpuram Tirth, that is maintained under the guidance of Pujya Acharya Punyodai Sagar Maharaj, where there was a 6 feet pratima of Mata Trishala installed on February 23, 2009. The court said that being followers of the Jain religion did not make the claimants the real owners of the idol. Merely because the revisionists are followers of the Jain religion and pray to Lord Mahavira, 24th Tirthankar, it cannot be said that the idol should be released in their favour, the court said, adding they were not its owners prior to the alleged theft. The capital-based Shri Digamber Jain Mandir Management Committee, 1008 Shri Parshvanath Digamber Jain Mandir and Shree Vardhman Digamber Jain Mandir Sabha had filed petitions after being denied possession of the idol by a lower court. The idol of Lord Mahavira was recovered from accused Manoj Kumar at Maurice Nagar Police station here in 2006 and a case of theft was registered. 7TH CENTURY IDOLS OF JAIN TIRTHANKAR EXCAVATED Sirpur (Chhattisgarh) Archaeologists in Chattisgarh have claimed to have discovered 7th century idols of Yamraj, the Lord of Death in Hinduism, astride a buffalo and an idol of Jain Tirthankar Shri Suparshva Nathji, a divine figure of Jain faith. Further excavations of lands in search of the Jain monuments is going on at the same site. "This idol is made of metamorphic rock, which is found in Mahanadi. It has a female structure on one of its side and structure of Yamraj sitting on a he-buffalo on the other side. The idols are believed to be dating back to the seventh century A.D. when Jains were in power in Sirpur and Buddhism, Jainism and Hinduism had ample patronage from the Kings. Archaeologists hope the latest finding will enable them to uncover the ancient history of Digambar Jains in the region. ELABORATE PRATISHTHA CELEBRATIONS AT PALITANA Holy idols of Bhagwan Mahavir and other Tirthankars as well as foot steps of Dada Gurudev Shri Jin Dutt Suri Ji and Shri Jin Kushal Suri Ji were installed and pratishtha ceremony carried out on the 12th March, 2009 at Palitana (In the talahati) in the holy presence of Upadhyay Shri Mani Prabh Sagar Ji Maharaj. Gachhadhipati Acharya Shri Jin Kushal Suri Ji Maharaj had given his consent for this ceremony. The celebrations were organised by Shri Shatrunjay Dada Gurudev Pratishtha Ayojan Samiti with the advice of Sheth Anand Ji Kalyan Ji Pedhi. STOLEN JAIN TEMPLE IDOLS RECOVERED IN KOLKATA Members of the Kolkata Jain community expressed their gratitude to city police chief Gautam Mohan Chakrabarti and deputy commissioner (detective department) Jawed Shamim for retrieving two idols of Jain temple in Alipore. A few months ago, the two idols one 8-inch eight metalled and other a 4-inch silver one went missing. It deeply hurt the sentiment of the Jain community. After a thorough investigation, detective department sleuths recovered the idols from a sacked security guard, who worked in a building near the temple. Vinod Jain, a spokesperson of the community, said, "We are really thankful to the city police for retrieving the sacred figures." JAIN MONK INSTALLED LAKSHMI IDOL OF KUSHANA PERIOD, MATHURA Shri Lakshmi in Jainism: In Jaina Literature , in Kalpa-Sutra the abhisheka (abhiseya) of Siri is one of the fourteen auspicious dreams of Trisala Devi, Before the birth of Mahavira. In Paryusana Kalpa the Abhiseya of Sri is described. The worshipful shri seated on a lotus of the lotus lake amongst the heights of Himalayas anointed by the waters poured upon her by the strong, thick trunks of the elephants of quarters. In the Bhagavati Sutra the same theme, as one of the fourteen dreams of Queen Dharini is designated as abhiseya In later Parisistaparvan of Hemachandra, Shri is referred to as Shri Devi who held in her hand a lotus to worship the gods with and her residence in the Himalayas is called Padmahrada. There is detailed description Goddess Lakshmi or Shri has been very popular in India. It has been common in the merchant communities. Some Jains do not worship any gods or goddesses other than the Tirthankaras and Some worship no idols at all. Lakshmi indicates prosperity. Worship of Lakshmi indicates an admiration of prosperity and a sense of liability towards it. Idol of Lakshmi is occasionally found in some Jain temples. There is a view that the Jains have taken worship of Lakshmi from the Puranic Brahmanism. This does not appear to be correct. The oldest known independent idol of Lakshmi is from Mathura from the Kushana period. It was installed under the supervision of Jain monk Aryadeva by an iron-merchant (or iron-smith) Gottika. They had also installed what is now the oldest known idol of Saraswati. Source : Mr. SANJAY KUMAR JAIN, E-Mail: vishwajains@yahoo.com SAINTS JAINS ARE PART OF HINDU SOCIETY-JAIN ACHARYA VIJAY RATNASUNDER SURISHWARJI - Jain saint Shri Vijay Ratnasunder Surishwar Ji Maharaj said in New Delhi that the Jains are part of Hindu society and any move to separate them from the Hindu society would be disastrous. He was presiding over a Dharma Sabha in Delhi organised at Mahavir Kendra on March 1. All the speakers and the saints participating in the Sabha stressed the need to warn the political leadership in clear words not to divide the society any more. The Dharma Sabha was organised by Indraprastha Vishwa Hindu Parishad. He further said the recent decision of the government to extend minority status to Jains would lead to separatism. "Every section of the Hindu society believes in harmony and togetherness. We need to first decide whether we wish to bridge the gap or want to create a wall of differences. Despite the diversity of various ways of worship, communities and Gods we all are one. Jains can never think of seeking separation from the Hindu society. Any move to extend minority status to any section of the society today is equal to attacking the integrity of the country. It should be seen as an attempt to destabilise the harmony between various sections of the Hindu society. He reminded the gathering of the Supreme Court decision delivered by three judges bench headed by the then Chief Justice Shri R. C. Lahoti in 2005 in which the court had clearly said the main task of the Minority Commission is to suggest the ways and means to create the social conditions in which first the names of various http://jainsamaj.org/magazines/march-2009.htm 8/11/2009 Page #4 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ AHIMSA TIMES - MARCH 2009 ISSUE - www.jainsamaj.org sections could be deleted from the minority list and finally the entire list of minorities is deleted forever. He said the Supreme Court is also in favour of the creation of the society where the divisions of majority and minority become irrelevant. "This attitude of the Supreme Court should be acceptable to all of us and we should move in that direction only so that the unity and harmony continues between all sections of the society," he added. He further said all these sections of the society existed even during the British regime and nobody was then divided on the basis of minority or majority. "Then why the unity of the nation is being dented in the name of cheaper issues. We have been living together for centuries and in future also we will live together. I wish to state in clear words that granting the status of minority to any section of the Hindu society anywhere in the country is wrong and illegal and should be rejected out rightly," he added. Page 4 of 16 Swami Hansdas, General secretary of Akhil Bharatiya Sant Samiti, criticised the government move to divide the society on the basis of minority and majority. Dr Surendra Jain, national spokesperson of VHP, said the minoritysm is a curse for the integrity of the country and it would prove very costly to the country. Kalikapeethadhishwar Mahant Surendra Avadhoot and Swami Bhaktiswaroopanand also spoke at the Dharma Sabha. The meeting also adopted a unanimous resolution, which said the Jains are an integral part of Hindu society and granting them minority status will damage the unity of the Hindu society. Source: Mr. Raj Kumar Jain, EMail: rkjain@enkayrub.com - BRAIN SURGERY OF ACHARYA YASHOVIJAY SURI JI PERFOMED SUCCESSFULLY AT PITTSBURGH MEDICAL CENTER - In A six-hour brain surgery performed in Pittsburgh, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, the surgeons restored sight to a man whose followers consider him to be a living god. Acharya Yashovijaysuri Ji Maharaj, aged 63 years, a great scholar of Jainism, one of the world's oldest religions, was later discharged.. Neurosurgeons removed a golf ball-sized tumor from deep in his brain by pulling it through his nose. After the operation, he felt comfortable and said, "my eye sight has progressed more than expected." A REPORT FROM PITTSBURGH MEDICAL CENTER Since age 11, Yashovijaysuri has devoted himself to the Jain religion, centered in India. Its basic tenets are nonviolence, open-mindedness and a lack of materialism. To avoid killing anything, Yashovijaysuri sweeps the ground before he steps, is vegetarian and doesn't wear clothing that is sewn because stitching could harm microorganisms. Several years ago, he lost sight in his left eye. He was beginning to lose vision in his right eye when Jain follower Dr. Dinesh Mehta, a retired oncologist in Antwerp, Belgium, learned about the problem from other followers. "He would never complain about it himself," Mehta said. "He doesn't care for his own life." Mehta persuaded Yashovijaysuri to get a brain scan, which showed a growing, noncancerous tumor pushing on his optic nerve. Doctors in India opened his skull but couldn't remove the tumor because it was deep, fibrous and fed by blood vessels. Mehta consulted medical colleagues who suggested a technique pioneered by UPMC neurosurgeon Dr. Amin Kassam. It allows surgeons to reach and remove a tumor through a patient's nostril and sinus cavity, using tiny knives, clamps and cameras. Mehta and fellow Jain follower Shrikant Parikh of Houston researched the surgery. "I went to 15 doctors, and they all pointed us to Pittsburgh," said Parikh. One problem: Yashovijaysuri had never traveled by a method other than foot because he cannot clear the path before him of insects or micro-organisms if he rides by car, bicycle, train, plane or boat. Mehta and Parikh persuaded Yashovijaysuri's 1 million followers to grant the guru permission http://jainsamaj.org/magazines/march-2009.htm 8/11/2009 Page #5 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ AHIMSA TIMES - MARCH 2009 ISSUE - www.jainsamaj.org Page 5 of 16 to fly to Pittsburgh for surgery. The Jain community raised money for the trip and operation. With assistance from Kassam and Dr. Paul Gardner, co-director of UPMC's Center for Skull Base Surgery, Dr. Daniel Prevedello removed Yashovijaysuri's tumor. "In this situation, you want to make sure everything goes perfectly," said Prevedello, associate director of exovascular neurosurgery at UPMC, "But it wasn't any different for me than any other surgery - they're all just as important - and when I was doing the procedure, I just focused on that." For the next year, Yashovijaysuri will regain vision. That's important to him, because he is an avid reader and has written more than a dozen books about Jainism. Color-blind before the operation, Yashovijaysuri now can see in a range of hues. Mehta said Yashovijaysuri agreed to the operation only because he wanted to be open-minded to the desires of the Jain community. When he returns home, he likely will fast to repent for any lives - including bacteria - killed by his plane ride and car trips. "He is only traveling for this medical mission," said Vinod Doshi of Monroeville, who attends the Hindu Jain Temple in Monroeville with about 60 Jain families. "He will not preach, he will not go to temple, he will not do anything that isn't related to his medical care. "It is a true credit to us in Pittsburgh that he has come here for his care," Doshi said. "Pittsburgh has become so famous in India. Every day we're getting calls from his followers, asking how he is doing." Allison M. Heinrichs can be reached, EMail: aheinrichs@tribweb.com or 412-380-5607. BRIEF HISTORY OF JAINISM: TRISHASHTHI SHALAKA PURUSHA CARITRA THE JAIN SAGA - An English translation of Acharya Hemacandra's 'Trishashthi Shalaka Purusha Caritra,By Helen Johnson, Revised by Muni Samvegayashavijaya, English, Set of 3 books,2009 235 x 155 mm 1800 pages, Deluxe Softcover edition in a Slipcase Rs. 1000 for the set. Acharya Hemacandra is one of the most influential Acaryas of the Jain tradition. He was widely respected not only in the Jain tradition, but also in the Sanskrit world of the 12th century. He is said to have composed 45 million verses. He wrote extensively in Prakrit, Sanskrit, Apabhramsha and Old Gujarati of his works, the most influential are: 'Yogashastra' and 'Trishashthi Shalaka Purusha Caritra'.Both are Sanskrit works, the former focusing on inner development and spiritual nourishment while the latter recounts the hagiographies of the 63 Illustrious Men of the Jain tradition. The 63 Great Men of the Jain tradition are:24 Tirthankaras,12 Cakravartis, 9 Narayanas, 9 Balabhadras, 9 Prati-Narayanas. This telling of the hagiographies of the 63 Great Men is known as the Jain Universal History. There is a rich tradition in the Jain community of writing highly articulate life stories of the 63 Great Men. Acarya Jinasena and Gunabhadra composed the masterly 'Mahapurana' in Sanskrit. This was followed by the Apabhramsha 'Mahapurana' of Acharya Pushpadanta. In this tradition of hagiographies, Hemacandra's 'Trishashthi Shalaka Purusha Caritra' comes third in chronological order but is probably the best known. Helen Johnson worked hard and composed a very fine translation of Hemacandra's 'Trishashthi Shalaka Purusha Caritra'. This was published some time in the 1940s and has been out of print since then. The present work is a revised edition of Helen Johnson's pioneering work. This work does not have diacritic marks, much to the chagrin of the scholar, but this makes the text easy to read for the common man. For reasons of brevity, the Sanskrit mula patha has not been given. Only the revised English translation has been given. The set of 3 books has been spectacularly printed on acid free paper, bound beautifully and packed in a smart slip case. The Central Minister of Health, Dr. Ambumani Rama Doss has now decided to move the Supreme Court and has filed a petition to allow re-imposition of the ban on smoking in the films. According to him, 72% of the young boys take to smoking after having seen their favorite actors smoking. AMBUMANI RAMADOSS CALLS FOR A NATIONAL POLICY ON ALCOHOL Dr. Ambumani Ram Doss, Health Minister, Government of India in reply to a question during http://jainsamaj.org/magazines/march-2009.htm 8/11/2009 Page #13 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ AHIMSA TIMES - MARCH 2009 ISSUE - www.jainsamaj.org Page 13 of 16 question-hour session in Lok Sabha replied that a national policy on drinking alcoholic products is being seriously considered and the cooperation of various State Governments is being sought. Presently, only two States, Gujarat and Jammu and Kashmir have imposed ban on drinking. Other States too, should prepare a policy on the same lines to impose a strict ban on drinking. He added that according to a recent survey, many boys start drinking at an early age between 13 to 15 years and 14.5 % of children have been found to indulge in drinking. This trend must be stopped and a national policy on this subject is therefore necessary. JADE GOODY AND THE SANCTITY OF DEATH -DR. SHANTANU DUTTA Dr. Shantanu Dutta, in his own words: "I have always been fascinated by the Jain practice of Santhara. In this practice, when some one from the Jain community believes that he or she has lived a full life and has fulfilled all their social and familial obligations, they can opt to voluntarily hasten the process of death by going on a fast which lasts till death. Unlike the fasts that Gandhiji popularized and others have also undertaken, this fast is not a protest fast; these men and women are not having any demands that they want met". Although this practice has some times been understood as suicide: Santhara has none of the emotional turbulence that is typically associated with the term best translated as atma hatya - the taking of one's life. Here death is welcomed through a peaceful, tranquil process providing peace of mind for everyone involved and is a ritual of great dignity. The question of how private and how dignified should death be is an important one and the question has been raised before. Probably in recent times, it was first raised while reflecting on the media coverage of the death of Princess Diana in an accident. The editors of many of the leading British tabloids had agreed that they had helped create a mood in which the paparazzi, who were hounding Diana when her car crashed in a Paris underpass, were out of control. Phil Hall, who was editor of the News of the World, said it was a circle of culpability involving the readers who demanded more photographs, the photographers who chased her and the newspapers that published the pictures. "A big Diana story could add 150,000 sales. So we were all responsible," he said. "I guess that that began the commercialization of death and there has been no looking back ever since. But even so, death and the private life of individuals has been some thing that the Indian media has generally not intruded into. But the rules seem to be changing". Times Now, the news channel has literally been giving a ball by ball commentary of Jade Goody on her death bed; which really looks macabre. Of course unlike the Diana episode, all this is happening with Jade's full consent. As she herself says, I've lived in front of the restraint cameras. And maybe I'll die in front of them. And I know some people don't like what I'm doing but at this point I really don't care what other people think. Now, it's about what I want." And since what Jade really wants is to earn enough cash for her children even in her dying days, the picture is some what complicated. But while the motives may some what blur the issue of the sanctity of death, it does not obliterate it. A death bed scene cannot really be telecast like a 20-20 cricket match of the IPL. There was a time when terminal illness was treated with a decorum that mirrored a society which was, for all its faults, essentially at peace with itself in respect to the eternal truths of life and death. But today, in a bizarre circus that is scarcely imaginable, tributes to Jade Goody are printed while she still lives, there was an interest in filming her as she breathed her last and apparently her reality show producer, Max Clifford is planning stories as he in true vulture fashion, waits for her death. Even the venerable BBC is readying itself to cover the event when it occurs. It has long been said of our time that we have lost the sanctity of life; now it would appear that we have lost the sanctity for death too. Shantanu Dutta is a medical doctor by training and a development professional by vocation. His writings mostly deal with change, complexity and conversion and tries to look at a changing world through heaven's eyes.
