WORSHIP BY DEVOTEES AND SAINTS ORGANISED TO INVOKE GODDESS SARASWATI IN NEW YORK Over three thousand devotees as well as Jain and Hindu monks took part in the worshipping ceremony of '24 Jain Tirthankars and Sarasvati Puja' on Long Island in New York. The puja was organised to promote unity of religions, nonviolence and wisdom, said Naveen C Shah, the organizer and sponsor of the event. Sarasvati, common to both Hinduism and Jainism, is the goddess of education and wisdom. Tirthankaras, Jainism believes, were enlightened beings. The last in the lineage was Lord Mahavir, a contemporary of the Buddha. During the over two-hour ceremony, all participants recited mantras (in Sanskrit and translated in Hindi and English) and performed the rituals under the direction of Prof UR Daga, a scholar of Jainism and Indology from Jodhpur. The puja concluded with 'aarti' according to Hindu and Jain rituals. Gujarati brunch and Rajasthani dinner was served to all present at the venue, Hofstra University's David S. LECTURE BY SAMANI PRASANNA PRAGYA JI AT BERLIN UNIVERSITY ON RELEVANCE OF JAINISM IN 21ST CENTURY - Samani Prasanna Pragya Ji belonging to Swetambar Terapanth sect spoke at a seminar in Berlin University on 13th June, 2007 on the subject of 'relevance of Jainism as a religion in 21st century'. She said, the growth of scientific knowledge and outlook has destroyed our superstitions and false dogmas. But unfortunately and surprisingly it has shaken our faith in spiritual and human values. Today we know more about the atom and atomic forces than the values needed for a meaningful and peaceful life. Nowadays, due to tremendous advancement of science and technology, we have efficient means of transportation. Physical distance is no bar to meeting people of different nationalities, cultures and religions, and consequently we have come closer and more dependent on each other as we were never before. Our world is shrinking but unluckily, the distance between our hearts is increasing day by day. JAINA DELEGATION ATTENDS JAIN MANUSCRIPTS LAUNCH AT BUCKINGHAM PALACE The delegation to Buckingham Palace, London was led by Jaina President Kirit C. Daftary, joined by Director at Large, Arvin Shah and VRG Committee member Prakash Mody and others. Over 300 attendees from around the globe had gathered to attend launching of the Catalogue of the Jain Manuscripts of The British Library by His Royal Highness Duke of Edinburgh. The project and the Catalogue is published by the Institute of Jainology, London and printed by the Mumbai Branch. The Institute recognized Professor Balbir, the Sheths from India and also posthumously Professor Tripathi. Dr. Nalini Balbir, Professor from University of Paris headed the project of cataloging Jain Manuscripts of Royal Library. It included manuscripts from the British Library, the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum. The Jain manuscripts kept there came not only from British sources, but also from German, Austrian and Indian scholars who felt it was the best and safest place to keep them. Dr. Balbir said, "In our days of advanced technology, this kind of work is relevant not only for the sake of preservation, but also for understanding how social networks worked in the past. Copying a manuscript is a sort of collective undertaking, which implies not only the scribe, but individuals, joint families, local groups, and so forth who acted as sponsors. Jain manuscripts usually provide a wealth of information of this kind, which we have tried to investigate." The work which started in 1994 by Professor Tripathi was completed in 2005. The manuscripts date as far back as 1201 AD, are mostly on paper and palm leaf, in the pothi format i.e. where the length is greater than the width. The catalogue contains information from 1083 manuscripts. Catalogues of manuscripts are of the utmost significance as it is the only source to verify by comparison any inaccuracies with the current printed scriptures. S. Zaveri & Muni Mahendra Kumar. The book deals wi, th Microcosmology, Atom in Modern Science - Structure of Atom, New Physics - Dual Nature of Matter, Constituents of Atom and Quantum Physics. For fully understanding the structure of matter, we have to descend from the macroscopic to the microscopic level. This has to be done in two stages - first, at the atomic level and second, at the subatomic level. The Quantum physics forced itself upon the scientific world at the beginning of this century with a discovery made in 1900 by Max Planck. He was trying to solve a specific problem, dealing with energy radiation. He wanted to know why objects glow bright and change colour when the temperature is increased (or decreased). Classical physics failed to give explanation to this simple phenomenon. Planck discovered that energy is not radiated (or absorbed) smoothly and continuously, but in spurts of specific amount or quanta (Planck himself was very unhappy with the implications of his discovery, as he had no intention to destroy the foundation of the Newtonian Physics.) It was difficult to accept the concepts of the new theory, even after its precise and consistent mathematical formulation, because their implications were practically unbelievable. The whole mind has to be applied to the object of meditation. The recitation of Mantras should not be taken to be a merelyl mechanical process. It is essentially a spiritual effort and exertion. So far, minority status has been given to Muslim, Sikh, Christian, Parsi and Bauddh communities. The sixth community to obtain minority status in West Bengal would be that of Jain. READERS NOTES WARNING 'MEAT KILLS' ON ALL MEAT AND MEAT PRODUCTS More and more information about general harmfulness of meat and mass stockbreeding transpires every day. Food and agriculture organisation (FAO) of the United Nations has recently announced shocking facts: the livestock sector is responsible for 18% of greenhouse gas emissions, which is a higher share then the one of transport, and is also the major cause for soil and water degradation. In order to prevent from negative consequences of stockbreeding, it is urgent to abandon or at least restrict the consumption of meat. For this reason The society for the rights and liberation of animals from Slovenia has made an initiative to the Government of Slovenia to attach to meat and meat products warnings like: "Meat causes cancer", "Meat affects climate", "Meat causes suffering to animals", "Meat inflicts upon mind". This initiative follows an example of the campaign against negative impact of smoking, where warnings like "Smoking kills" and others can be seen on packets of cigarettes. Although there is no doubt about smoking being harmful, this harm can not be compared with one caused by the stockbreeding. The rate of mortality caused by meat consumption is vitally higher then the one due to smoking. The environmental damage caused by smoking is incomparable with the harm caused by stockbreeding. And the climate changes caused by smoking are negligible comparing to the harmfulness of stockbreeding which is the main climate destroyer. Therefore warnings such as "Meat kills" would be at least of the same justification as warnings "Smoking kills". Our suggestion is that you carry out a similar action in your country. (Through Dr. Sandeep K.Jain, E-Mail : jeevdaya04@yahoo.co.in) LIFE LONG VEGETARIAN DIET REDUCES THE RISK OF COLORECTAL CANCER Science Daily - According to new research presented at Digestive Disease Week 2007 a vegetarian diet may have a significant impact on the gastrointestinal system, affecting the risk for certain diseases. The average person's lifetime risk of developing colorectal cancer (CRC) is about seven percent and the role of diet in preventing this type of cancer remains under debate. Most of all, previous studies enrolled middle-aged subjects, raising the possibility that CRC development may start before common interventions. Researchers from Tata Memorial Hospital (TMH) in Mumbai, India, set out to determine whether a vegetarian diet is associated with reduced risk of CRC if started very early in life. In this study, researchers used a prospectively created database of 8,877 Indian patients managed in a clinical nutrition service from January 1, 2000 through December 31, 2005, to examine the association of life-long vegetarianism with incidence of CRC. During the evaluation for nutrition support, a history of life-long vegetarianism (due to religious reasons) was obtained from all patients to plan an appropriate diet. Twenty-seven percent of subjects (2,092 patients) from the control cohort were life-long vegetarians and 22.4 percent (178 patients) of subjects with colon cancer were vegetarians. Patients with colorectal cancer (n=796) comprised the primary patient cohort for this study. Three groups of controls were generated from the same database for separate comparison with the CRC cohort. These included all patients with non-CRC cancers (control group one: n=7,273), patients with non-CRC and tobacco-related cancers (control group two n=1,844), and patients with benign disorders (control group three: n=74). Multivariate analysis of 7,641 patients was performed by adjusting for age, gender, body mass index and economic status. Vegetarianism was significantly associated with patients over 65 years, male gender, body mass index (BMI) of less than 20 Kg/m2 and economic deprivation. The inverse association of CRC and lifelong vegetarianism was observed with all the three control groups. "A well-planned vegetarian diet is a healthy way to meet your nutritional needs," said Yogesh M. Shastri, M.D., of Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Hospital, Frankfurt, Germany and previously a co-author of this study at TMH, Mumbai, India. "The exact mechanism by which life long vegetarianism may reduce the risk of sporadic CRC needs further investigation. Prolonged vegetarianism starting in early life may be a viable lifestyle option for those at risk of developing the disease." MISCELLANEOUS MAHATMA GANDHI'S BIRTHDAY DECLARED AS INTERNATIONAL NON-VIOLENCE DAY "Mahatma Gandhi's Birthday has been declared as the International Day for Non-violence. In a tribute to Gandhi's philosophy of brotherhood and peace, the UN General Assembly declared October 2, his birth anniversary, as the International Day of Non-Violence. The resolution, which urged member States to observe the day each year in appropriate manner to disseminate the message of non-violence, was co-sponsored by 137 of the 191 members and was adopted without a vote." In the recent avatar of Munnabhai, the very well informed Circuit tells Munnabhai that October 2nd is 'dry day' and it is a holiday, when bhai first enquires what is the significance of that day. In this backdrop comes the UN resolution on celebrating Gandhiji's Birthday as the global Non-Violence Day. It is an honor for India and Indians. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has welcomed the United Nations General Assembly's adoption of an Indian resolution declaring October 2 as the International Day of Non-Violence. In a statement, Dr Singh described it as a great tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and a proud moment for India." dillI ucca nyAyAlaya COURT ALLOWS UNDER-AGE JAIN STUDENT TO PURSUE POSTGRADUATE COURSE New Delhi, May 23 The Delhi High Court directed Delhi University to allow Dipika Jain, who was short of the required 20 years, to take an entrance test for admission into its post graduate course. Justice B.D. Ahmed asked the university and the head of its Mathematics DELHI HIGH COURT Department to let Dipika Jain, an undergraduate student at Maitreyi College of the university, take the entrance test. In a petition, Jain, a resident of Gurgaon in neighbouring Haryana, submitted that the university had barred her from taking the admission test for a postgraduate course in Operational Mathematics on the ground that she would not fulfil the required criterion of being 20 years old on Oct 1, 2007. She said the university, in fact, had admitted her to the college to pursue her graduation course in mathematics only on the high court's directions three years ago. Opposing Jain's plea to take the entrance test, counsel for the university said she was falling short of one year and 20 days in age to qualify for admission to the post graduate course. But her counsel submitted, "She is a bright student and stood second in her second year examination. She has scored 71.6 percent marks in aggregate and would score a high percentage of marks in the final." Page 8 of 15 INDIAN PARLIAMENTARIANS OPPOSE AMERICAN PATENT AND COPY-RIGHT ON YOGA TO U.S. COMPANIES A large number of members of Parliament met at New Delhi to discuss the issue of American patent being allowed on Yoga and sanctioning yoga-related copy-rights to American companies. American Patents and Trade Marks Office has so far sanctioned 150 yoga-related copy-rights and 134 patents on Yoga-related instruments and equipment. The M.P.'s considering Yoga as a part of Indian ethos and culture have seriously opposed this move by the U.S. Government department. They strongly expressed their views that Yoga was born in India more than 5000 years ago and ancient literature was available on this subject written by sages and saints and it was therefore not a part of modern science. It was totally wrong on the part of U.S. Government to sanction copy-rights and patents on Yoga to American companies. They also urged the Indian Government to take up the matter with U.S. Government. BHAGWAN MAHAVEER VIKLANG SAHAYATA SAMITI'S 'JAIPUR FOOT' COMING UP NOW IN COLOMBIA - prosthesis that has helped thousands of disabled worldwide to walk again, is set to be launched from Colombia - its first centre on foreign soil. The Colombian government has sanctioned the Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti, producers of the artificial limb, to set up base in the South American country. The BMVSS has entered into a tie-up with a Colombia-based NGO. M.K. Mathur of BMVSS told IANS: 'The Jaipur Foot centre in Colombia is Islated to start in August.' According to him, experts would go to Colombia with the required machinery. Initially three-fourths of the artificial foot would be made in Jaipur and the rest in Colombia. The entire production would shift to Colombia after a few months. It was Jaipur resident Ram Charan Sharma, who hails from a family of sculptors, who conceived Jaipur Foot in 1968. It was only after trials and with the assistance of eminent orthopaedic surgeon P. K. Sethi that the prosthetic limb was launched that year. The amazing lightness and mobility of the artificial limb, coupled with its low price, is the reason for its popularity. Those who wear it can run, climb trees, pedal bicycles and drive a car - all without the aid of a stick or any support. While a prosthetic limb can cost several thousand dollars in the US, the Jaipur Foot costs only $20-28 in India. Sublimely low-tech, it is made of rubber, wood and aluminium and can be assembled with local materials. Established in 1975, BMVSS provides the artificial limb free to millions of people who have lost their limbs in accidents or war. Its chief patron is D.R. Mehta, a former head of the Securities and Exchange Board of India. It was only after the Afghan war in the late 1970s that the use of the limb spread outside India. Russian land mines in Afghanistan had then disabled thousands. The International Committee of the Red Cross found the Jaipur Foot to be the hardiest to tackle the tough, mountainous Afghan terrain. Since then, countless landmine victims in many countries have been fitted with the Jaipur Foot. The limb has also provided relief to 15,000 physically disabled people in foreign countries. The centre is also known as a 'mini India' with people flocking to it for relief from all over the country. 'We receive patients from Gujarat in the west to Assam in the east, and from Srinagar in the north to Kanyakumari in the south,' said a BMVSS official. AHIMSA TIMES - JUNE 2007 ISSUE - www.jainsamaj.org Page 10 of 15 DEVLOK 1.Shri Mohan Muni Ji Maharaj, General Secretary, Shwetambar Sthanakwasi Shraman Sangh, while moving on foot from Ajmer to Jaipur on way to Delhi, met with a serious accident with a fast-moving vehicle driven by a reckless driver and he expired on the spot. The accident occurred near village Parlu on the 26th May, 2007. His body was carried to near-by Dudu village by the residents of Dudu village, who happened to be from Jain community. The news of accident spread fast to Jaipur, Ajmer and other near-by places and a large number of devotees rushed to Dudu to have his darshan. The last rites were performed by them as is customary and the body was then cremated at the village. He was 84 years old but still, he used to have vihar on foot, unlike many other saints, who are carried in a hand-driven cart During his sainthood, he had moved to various places in the states of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab and Delhi. He was instrumental in working towards unity among sadhu-samaj and worked hard as a General Secretary to prevent rift between two sections caused by vested interests and his contribution to Shraman sangh was well-known. 2. Sadhwiji Shri Prem Kumari, from shwetambar sthanakwasi sect, aged 93 years, left for her heavenly abode, having accepted santhara, just 3 hours before the death at Pali town in Rajasthan on the 25th May, 2007. She had accepted diksha at the age of 33 years alongwith her son and daughter. 3. Mahasati Shri Suyashya Ji, follower of Shri Saubhagmal Ji maharaj and Acharya Umesh Muni Ji maharj and disciple of Mahasati Shri Magan Kunwar Ji maharaj left for her heavenly abode after a protracted illness on the 22nd May, 2007, having accepted santhara well in time. She had obtained Diksha on the 13th May, 1964 from Shri Umesh Muni Ji. 4. Aryika Raj Srimata ji, a Jain Ganini from Digambar sect left for devlok at the age of only 47 years on the 7th May, 2007 at Aurangabad in Maharashtra. She had accepted Kshullak-vrat Diksha under Acharya Shri Pushpadant sagar Ji maharaj at Chhindwada in M.P. and Aryika-vrat diksha under Acharya Shri Kalyan Sagar Ji maharajat at Gwalior in the year 1987.Born on the 17th March, 1961, she was accepted as Aryika on 19th April, 1987 and was given the title of Ganini on 17th February, 1997. She had been suffering from Kidney ailment for the last 6-7 years. 5. Sadhvi Hem Prabha & Sadhvi Vineet Prabha belonging to Shwetambar Moorti-pujak Khartar-gachh sect, met with an accident and died on the spot, while moving on the road from Pali towards Jaipur in Rajasthan on the morning of Thursday, the 21st June, 2007. A fast-moving trolley, driven by a reck-less driver went out of control and hit severely the whole group of sadhwis, killing on the spot, two of them, Shri Hem Prabha Shri Ji and Sri Vineet prabha Sri ji and injuring seriously, the other three. Those injured were rushed to near-by hospital in Pali town, where they are reported to be under observation and treatment. The body of the two sadhwi, was carried in 'baikunthi' in a large procession to the cremation ground in the afternoon of the same day. Shri Pushp Jain, Member of Parliament, Shri Gyan Chand Parakh, M.L.A., Shri Mangal Prabhat Lodha, President of Khartargachh sect and M.L.A. from Maharashtra joined the procession and paid their homage to the departed souls.
